Competition for modern Jazz composition in Graz, Austria

Jazz in Graz

For many years, jazz music has been an important part of the musical and cultural identity of the city of Graz, through the lively club scene, festivals and other performance spaces, which present local and international perfomers and are supported by a well informed and enthusiastic jazz community. The other major factor in the jazz life of Graz is the renowned Jazz Institute of the “University of Music and Performing Arts”. Established in 1965, this is the oldest University jazz department on the European continent and because of its excellent reputation, it attracts top faculty and students from all around the world.


Competition 2017

After 2011 and 2013 the Jazz Institute of the “University of Music and Performing Arts” is happy to announce the third issue of this major European jazz composition competition in 2017.  We are pleased to present an internationally well-respected jury. All finalists will be instructed and judged by these fine gentlemen.






Each applicant is allowed to submit one composition.

The application must include all of the following material:

Anonymized composition (transposed score, single parts), printed and taped plus the all the parts in digital form (CD-Rom, USB flash drive)
Cover sheet including name, date of birth, address of main residence, email address and phone number
Scan of either passport or ID card to be able to verify the exact age of the applicant

Eligibility Requirements


All persons with a permanent residence in an European country  or individuals who are currently enrolled as a full time student at one of the European Universities or Conservatories.
The competition is restricted to composers at the age of 30. (born after November 01. 1986)
Awardee of the competition in 2014 are suspended from a repeated participation.




The submitted piece must be an original composition. Arrangements are not accepted. The piece must not have been recorded or published prior to the competition and the duration cannot exceed eight minutes, including all solo sections.
The piece must be written exactly for the following instrumentation:



Any instrument can be used for improvised solos. The score and parts must be transposed. The whole peace must not have any leads to the composer’s identity.
